Grand Jury Overview
Purpose and Function
A grand jury is a body of citizens empowered to investigate potential criminal activity and determine whether there is sufficient evidence to charge an individual with a crime.
Selection and Roles
Grand juries are typically composed of 12 to 23 individuals selected from the community. They are tasked with reviewing evidence presented by the prosecutor, hearing from witnesses, and deciding whether to indict (formally charge) the accused.
