Jerusalem: A City's Rich and Contested History

From Biblical Origins to Modern Conflicts

Jerusalem, a city with a history as rich and diverse as its inhabitants, has witnessed pivotal moments in the annals of humankind. From its humble beginnings as a small settlement in the Bronze Age, it has evolved into a global metropolis that holds immense religious and cultural significance for Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike.

The Biblical Era and Jewish Sovereignty

Jerusalem's origins are entwined with the narrative of the Hebrew Bible. According to the Torah, the city was first established as Salem, the capital of Melchizedek, a mysterious priest-king. Later, it became known as Jebus and was conquered by King David, who made it the capital of the United Kingdom of Israel in the 10th century BCE. Under David's reign, Jerusalem underwent significant expansion and became a center of religious and political power.
