Blue Jays Acquire Whit Merrifield From Royals

Blue Jays acquire Whit Merrifield from Royals

Buyout of contract option gives Royals a top pitching prospect

Merrifield ends seven-year tenure in Kansas City with 1001 hits

TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays announced they've acquired infielder Whit Merrifield from the Kansas City Royals for right-hander Max Castillo.

Merrifield, whose contract runs through 2023 with a mutual option for 2024, ends his Royals career with 1001 hits.

After years of his name surfacing in rumors and teams vying for his services, the Royals finally found a suitable trade partner in the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays pulled off a buzzer-beater ahead of Tuesday's Trade Deadline, acquiring Merrifield in exchange for Castillo, a 23-year-old right-hander with a 4.05 ERA in Double-A this season.

It's the second straight season the Royals have traded away a fan favorite ahead of the Deadline. Last year, they dealt outfielder Jorge Soler to the Atlanta Braves.

Merrifield, 33, is a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner. He's a versatile player who can play multiple positions in the infield and outfield. He's also a solid hitter with a career batting average of .292.

The Blue Jays are hoping Merrifield can provide a boost to their offense and help them make a run at a Wild Card berth.

The Royals, meanwhile, are rebuilding and Castillo is a key piece of their future. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-hander has a fastball that can reach 96 mph and a developing changeup.

The trade is a win-win for both teams. The Blue Jays get a proven veteran who can help them now, while the Royals get a young, talented pitcher who could be a key part of their future.

Merrifield is expected to join the Blue Jays in time for their game against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.
