Global Health Crisis Escalates

WHO Calls Emergency Meeting on Mpox Outbreak

Global Health Crisis Escalates

Urgent Action Needed to Address Spread

In a move that reflects the growing severity of the mpox outbreak, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called for an emergency meeting to discuss the escalating crisis. The meeting, scheduled for August 7, will bring together global health experts to assess the situation and determine appropriate actions to contain the spread of the disease.

The call for an emergency meeting comes amidst an alarming surge in mpox cases worldwide. As of November 12, 2023, over 12,500 suspected cases have been reported, including 581 deaths. The outbreak has spread to over 100 countries and territories, raising concerns about its potential impact on global health.

WHO officials have expressed concern that the mpox outbreak is evolving rapidly, with new cases being reported daily. While the virus is primarily transmitted through close contact, it has also been detected in bodily fluids and on contaminated surfaces. This has led to fears that the outbreak could become even more widespread if not addressed promptly.
