CEPI and WHO Issue Urgent Call to Researchers

Global Pandemic Preparedness Efforts Intensify

Collaboration and Innovation Key to Success

Geneva, August 1, 2024 - The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have issued an urgent call to researchers worldwide to join forces in the fight against deadly infectious diseases.

The joint initiative, known as the Pandemic Preparedness and Response Equity (PREPARE) Task Force, aims to accelerate the development and equitable distribution of vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics for future pandemics.

"We are at a critical juncture in the history of global health," said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. "With the ongoing threat of emerging infectious diseases, we must invest in research and innovation to ensure we are prepared for future outbreaks."

CEPI will provide funding and expertise to support the development of new vaccines and technologies, while WHO will coordinate the global response and ensure equitable access to these innovations.

"Our goal is to create a world where every person, regardless of where they live, has access to life-saving vaccines and treatments during an epidemic," said Dr. Richard Hatchett, CEO of CEPI.

The PREPARE Task Force will focus on three key areas:

  • Accelerating the development of broad-spectrum vaccines and treatments
  • Strengthening global surveillance and early warning systems
  • Ensuring equitable access to vaccines and treatments worldwide

Researchers interested in joining the PREPARE Task Force are encouraged to visit the CEPI website for more information.
