Netflix Sued By Indian Director Over Squid Game

Indian director claims Netflix copied his 2019 movie

Netflix is being sued by an Indian director who claims the streaming giant copied his 2019 movie when it created the hit series Squid Game. The director, Sajid Khan, filed a lawsuit in a Mumbai court on Monday, alleging that Netflix infringed his copyright by using a similar concept, characters, and plot in its series.

Khan's movie, titled "Round Six," was released in India in 2019

It tells the story of a group of contestants who are invited to participate in a series of children's games, with the winner taking home a large cash prize. However, the games are deadly, and the contestants are killed off one by one until only one person remains.

Squid Game, which was released on Netflix in September 2021, has become a global phenomenon. The series follows a similar premise, with a group of contestants competing in a series of children's games for a chance to win a large sum of money. However, the games in Squid Game are also deadly, and the contestants are killed off one by one until only one person remains.

Khan alleges that Netflix copied several key elements from his movie, including the concept of a deadly children's game, the use of masked guards, and the elimination of contestants one by one. He is seeking damages from Netflix for copyright infringement.

Netflix has not yet commented on the lawsuit.
